Orton-Gillingham Method

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) method is a direct, systematic, and multi-sensory approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. It is particularly effective for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Here are the key components of the OG approach:

Multisensory Instruction

OG uses visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile patways simultaneousty to enhance memory and learning of written language.  This means students engage in activities that involve seeing, hearing, speaking and motor movements to reinforce learning.

Structured and Sequential

The instruction follows a logical order, beginning with the simplest and most basic elements and progressing to more complex material. Each step is based on previously learned material to ensure a solid foundation.

Diagnostic and Prescriptive

Instruction is  tailored to the individual needs of each student. OG practitioners, continually assess and monitor student progress to plan and adjust instruction accordingly.

Cognitive Approach

OG helps students understand the rules and patterns and phonograms in the English language, improving their ability to decode words, comprehend text, and spell accurately.
